Ice Cream

Rich came home on Sunday and announced that he had so kindly signed us up to bring ice cream to the ward party on Saturday. Not just any ice cream - homemade ice cream. I myself had also seen the list and purposely NOT signed up to bring homemade ice cream, but rather a simple topping instead. Why? Because I have never made homemade ice cream before. I didn't really want the ward party to be my first experiment. What if it didn't work out? Rich's reasoning behind it all was that we have been wanting to make homemade ice cream - so this was a good excuse.

So, I finally pulled out our trusty ice cream maker that we got for our wedding. It is the small 1.5 quart kind that you put in the freezer - no ice, no salt...quick and easy. We bought some supplies and made Strawberry Ice Cream. True to its' word, it was pretty easy. Although next time I think that we need a different recipe...This one was way too creamy. We're going to try again tonight though for attempt 2. Any good recipes?

I love homemade ice cream. The recipe we use is really simple, but we use it in the bigger machine with ice and rock salt. You could give this a try.

1/2 gallon of flavored milk (strawberry, choc. etc)
1 can sweet & condenced milk
1 sm tube cool whip

Mix together and churn until the mixer stops. Let it stand in ice water 30+ min, covered with a heavy towel or something similiar to insulate it. (I have to leave ours almost an hour)

1/4 c. rock salt for every layer of ice. Rotate ice & salt, ending with ice.

I have a killer strawberry recipe. It's really tart with limes, oranges, lemons, etc. I'll give it to you some time.
